Caboclos House
Caboclos House began as a riverside family home on Acajatuba Lake and grew organically into an ecolodge. It is run by the local riverside community itself – women, guides, cooks, boat drivers and suppliers – so that the income from tourism stays in the region. The experiences follow the principles of community-based tourism, within the Rio Negro Sustainable Development Reserve.
The lodge was built with local materials and low-impact construction, and uses renewable energy, composting and recycling. Meals are prepared with regional ingredients, many of them sourced locally, such as fresh tapioca and pirarucu.
Seasons: the river level changes the landscape and the activities. During high water (March to August) canoe trips go through the igapós (flooded forest); during low water (September to February) longer forest trails are possible and white-sand beaches appear along the Rio Negro. At the peak of the flood (around June) or of the dry season (October and November), some activities may be replaced.
What to bring: Comfortable clothes, long pants, shorts, socks, sandals, sneakers or boots suitable for hiking in the jungle, bathing suit, sunscreen, flashlight, binoculars, repellent, sunglasses, hat or cap and raincoat.
Transport
The regular transfer between Manaus and the lodge is made by van and boat:
Departure from Manaus: between 8:00 am and 8:30 am.
Duration: 2 to 3 hours in total (about 3 hours in September, October and November, due to the low river level).
Return: departure from the lodge at 2:00 pm.
Packages
All packages combine nature, riverside culture, regional cuisine and moments of contemplation, with experiences led by local guides, residents and women entrepreneurs of the region. Some activities depend on the season: river beaches appear during low water and canoe trips through the igapós (flooded forest) happen during high water. Where the itinerary says "or", guests choose one of the options.
